Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy in Ternopil: Viasan Medical Centre

Sclerotherapy (phlebosclerosis obliteration) is an effective non-surgical method of treating the initial stage of varicose veins of the lower extremities and telangiectasias (spider veins). It consists in gluing the changed venous vessels and forming a fibrous cord in their place, which dissolves over time. It involves the introduction of a sclerosing substance (sclerosant) into the lumen of the vein.

sclerotherapy Ternopil

A popular, affordable and technically easy-to-perform technique that allows to achieve almost perfect results (aesthetic and functional). It is widely practiced in advanced clinics of Ukraine and the world.

Sclerotherapy can be performed in Ternopil at the Viasan Medical Centre after consultation with a phlebologist.

Types of sclerotherapy

There are several options for phlebosclerosis obliteration. A phlebologist determines which of them is the most rational for a particular case.

Echosclerotherapy consists in administration of a sclerosant under the control of an ultrasound scanner. It is used for ligation of large diameter superficial veins and trunk veins. In some cases, the echo option is a better alternative to traditional phlebectomy.

Foam-form sclerotherapy. It involves the use of a foamy form of sclerosant, which is prepared immediately before the procedure. The foam actively displaces blood from the vessel, providing a tighter contact between the adhesive substance and the venous wall.

Compression microsclerotherapy means bonding of very small venous vessels. It is the main method of treatment of telangiectasias. This manipulation requires almost the skills of a jeweller and the experience of a phlebological surgeon. It is performed for aesthetic purposes at the request of the patient.

Catheter scleroobliteration consists in administration of a sclerosant into a venous vessel through a catheter. This makes it possible to eliminate the oropharyngeal and tympanic refluxes of the great and small saphenous veins. It is used as an alternative to stripping (when removing a subcutaneous line).

Indications

• the initial stages of varicose veins of the lower extremities;

• single and multiple varicose nodes up to 4 mm in diameter;

• intradermal varicose veins (spider veins, red and blue telangiectasias);

• subcutaneous vascular formations, such as cavernous hemangiomas, lymphangiomas;

• segmental varicose veins without reflux along the main trunks.

Sclerotherapy can be a separate procedure or performed in combination with endovenous laser coagulation, trunk phlebectomy and other surgeries on venous vessels.

How sclerotherapy is performed

It is an outpatient non-surgical technique that does not require incisions, and therefore, anaesthesia. Under constant visual control, the sclerosant is injected into a vein in the form of an injection. Punctures are painless, as they are performed with a thin needle. The dose of the medication is determined by a phlebologist and depends on the size of the affected area. When it is introduced, a small local tingling is possible, which quickly passes. In general, the procedure is comfortable for the patient.

Usually 3 to 6 sessions with breaks are needed. The duration of the session is a little more than 30 minutes. This time is enough to perform 5-25 injections. The number of sclerotherapy sessions is determined by the doctor depending on the clinical situation and the task.

After sclerotherapy, it is recommended:

• to avoid prolonged sitting or standing;

• to refuse from hot procedures (bath, sauna, solarium);

• to exclude sunbathing (hyperpigmentation is possible);

• to take a break from sports, reduce physical activity;

• to wear compression underwear or elastically bandage the legs for 3-4 months.

Contraindications

Absolute:

• allergy to a sclerosing substance;

• thrombosis of deep and superficial veins;

• blood coagulation disorders;

• skin diseases at the place of intended injections;

• pregnancy and lactation period.
