Ultrasound of the pelvic organs is an indispensable examination in gynaecology, urology and surgery. It is intended for both women and men everywhere to assess the state of the genitourinary system, detection and differentiation of a number of diseases. It can be performed in three ways: transabdominal, transvaginal, transrectal. All three are available in our centre.

The essence of the procedure

Ultrasound examination allows to diagnose preclinical signs of many gynaecological, urological and surgical pathologies, which is mostly the final argument in the diagnosis and choice of treatment tactics.

What is examined?

For women:

For women:

Ultrasound of the pelvic organs is an important preventive screening for prostate cancer. In surgery, it is prescribed to monitor the condition of organs after invasive procedures.

Preparation

Depends on the method of execution. Transabdominal ultrasound (through the abdominal wall) is prescribed to women and men. It is performed when the bladder is full. Men need to empty their bladder during a prostate exam to determine the amount of residual urine.

Transvaginal ultrasound is prescribed to women and performed on an empty bladder. You need to urinate before the examination. Preparation implies normal hygiene. Cannot be done during menstruation.

Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) is prescribed to men to detect and differentiate prostate pathology. Involves the insertion of a rectal sensor in the rectum, which requires bowel cleansing and flatulence elimination.

How it is performed

Scanning and visualization of the results of all three ultrasound methods are performed by the same scenario. According to the standards, a medical protocol is filled out and doctor’s opinion is issued. The only difference is in the technique of execution.

Transabdominal ultrasound is scanning through the anterior abdominal wall. In the supine position. The examined area is lubricated with gel. The diagnostician moves the sensor on the skin with a little pressure.

Transvaginal ultrasound is performed through the vagina with a vaginal probe with a disposable latex nozzle. Ultrasound waves are reflected from the walls of the vagina and the organs being examined.

Transrectal ultrasound is performed through the rectum with a rectal sensor, which is inserted into the anus to a depth of 5 cm. The procedure is associated with minimal discomfort, similar to a normal finger examination.
