Endovenous laser coagulation

Endovenous laser coagulation in Ternopil: Viasan

Endovenous laser coagulation (obliteration) is a modern, effective, minimally invasive method of treating varicose veins of the lower extremities at any stage, including its complications (thrombosis, thrombophlebitis, trophic ulcers). The essence of the technique consists in gluing the internal venous walls with thermal laser radiation. As a result of such sealing of the lumen in the damaged vein, blood flow through it stops, being distributed along healthy vascular collaterals.

Endovenous laser coagulation is a complete alternative to classical surgery. It is characterized by low trauma, efficiency and an excellent aesthetic result. It is actively practiced by phlebologists as an independent method or in combination with other methods (short stripping, mini-phlebectomy, etc.).

In Ternopil, endovenous laser coagulation is performed at the Viasan Medical Centre.

Advantages of endovenous laser coagulation

As practice shows, the treatment of varicose veins of the lower extremities by medication alone is ineffective. The usage of phlebotonic medications, ointments, wearing compression knitwear brings temporary relief. The causes of the disease are anatomic and physiological vascular failure (valvular insufficiency with reflux, structural weakness of the vascular wall), which is poorly treated conservatively.

The problem generally persists and usually worsens over time.

Experts advise more radical measures. Moreover, modern phlebology has a decent arsenal of effective minimally invasive techniques capable of getting rid of varicose veins forever.

Endovenous laser coagulation is a well-established, reliable, and safe procedure with a predictable outcome. It is performed on an outpatient basis, without hospitalization and the issuance of a sick leave.

Advantages:

• minimal surgical access (through a puncture), absence of cosmetic defects and the need for sutures;

• local anaesthesia (no need for general one), good patient tolerance;

• absence of postoperative complications (haematoma, swelling, pain, impaired sensitivity, traumatization of adjacent nerves and blood vessels);

• a short period of rehabilitation, maintaining working capacity.

Indications:

• varicose disease of the lower extremities of any stage;

• trunk varicoses of the subcutaneous veins;

• varicose veins of large diameter;

• phlebitis (inflammation of the inner vascular wall);

acute subcutaneous thrombophlebitis;

• trophic disorders in the leg.

Preparation

On the eve of the procedure, an examination is carried out (laboratory tests, tests for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis, ultrasound of veins), selection of compression knitwear. These moments are discussed with a phlebologist at a consultation. After evaluating the results of the diagnosis, the time of the surgery is assigned.

There are no special restrictions before the procedure. It is recommended to wear comfortable clothes and low-heeled shoes on the day of the procedure.

How is it going?

1. Before the manipulation, the laser exposure zone is marked.

2. The boundaries of the operating field are determined under the control of ultrasound equipment.

3. Skin covers are treated with aseptic solutions.

4. Local (tumescent) anaesthesia is performed under ultrasound monitoring. A solution containing a prolonged anaesthetic and a vasoconstrictor is injected around the vessel.

5. A puncture is made in the right place, a laser light guide is inserted into the vessel using a special needle.

6. A catheter with an emitter is passed over the entire affected area and the vein is sealed.

7. The light guide is removed, the puncture site is sealed with a plaster (adhesive bandage).

The thermal action of the laser beam works locally without damaging the surrounding tissues. The manipulation lasts no more than 50 minutes, after 2-3 hours the patient can go home.
